Information about allergies

June 22, 2010 · No Comments

An allergy is:

A. A psychological overreaction to certain stimuli.
B. A neurological disorder triggered by certain substances.
C. An overreaction by your immune system to a substance.
D. None of the above.

Many people find relief from their allergy symptoms after a regimen of allergy shots (immunotherapy). The purpose of the shots is to increase your tolerance to the substances (allergens) that provoke allergy symptoms. Although usually effective, immunotherapy is not a quick fix. It requires a steady schedule of shots with gradually increasing doses, and it usually takes 1 to 2 years to determine whether you’re benefiting from the treatment.

Each person’s regimen of shots is specific to that person’s allergens as determined by allergy tests and the attending physician. Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) is the most common problem for which people get shots here.

To be safe and effective, the dose must be increased gradually. You need to go to your health care provider’s office for shots no less than 3 days apart and no more than 8 days apart. We start at a low concentration and a low volume.

You continue on this schedule for about 15 to 30 weeks. If you stay on schedule and don’t have adverse reactions, the dose is increased each time until you reach your maintenance dose. At that point, you’ll come in every 4 weeks. Most people make it to their top anticipated dose, but some don’t. They may start having reactions before getting to that point. We work with each person individually.

We do a review after about 2 years of your being on the maintenance dose. This includes a physician’s consultation, and possibly repeat skin testing, to see if your allergies are still there. Follow-up reviews are recommended about every year after that. Of course, you can often tell if the treatment is working by your symptoms. For example, if you’re allergic to ragweed pollen and you’ve been at your maintenance dose before the ragweed season, you should notice an improvement in symptoms if the treatment is working.
